I Like to Watch

When Rose Caraway,
AKA, The Sexy Librarian, includes your story in an anthology, it's kind of a big deal. No, it's a really big deal.

So, I am extra tickled to say I Like to Watch is in her new book, Tonight, she's Yours, GET IT NOW

Love, Lust and Zombies Cover Art

The paperback version is now available for pre-sale on Amazon, though it won't ship until September 2015. Mitzi Szereto is, hands down, my favorite editor, so I know this one will include some killer stories.

"Let’s face it: zombies are hot, and baby, they’re getting hotter. Although not the most traditional of sex symbols, zombies are truly coming into their own, even landing on the silver screen in romantic roles, not to mention ambling and shambling across the pages of novels and television screens. Gone are those one-dimensional scary characters from George Romero’s grim and gruesome flick Night of the Living Dead. Zombies now have a lot more to offer to the non-zombie world.

From the bestselling novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to the hit TV series The Walking Dead, zombies are taking over as a source of entertainment. So isn’t it about time they had their more...err...romantic and sexy sides showcased?"

I've written before about my inspiration for the story I submitted, Under a Perfect Sun, and I was thrilled to hear it was called "literary and ambitious, sci-fi" by the publishing company. I was also honored to learn that it had been picked to anchor the book. Pretty good for a story that started as a writing challenge for me, and with a question . . . could I write a story that involved zombies and sex that also provided a logical explanation for the deed?

Darker Edge of Desire Excerpts

Love, passion and sex…it’s all here in Darker Edge of Desire. Gothic literature has always possessed a dark attraction ripe with the promise of the forbidden and the sensual. In Darker Edge of Desire, Mitzi Szereto takes the sexualized Gothic and ratchets it up a few notches into the danger zone, opening a door into the darker side of lust and love that only the courageous dare to venture through. Venturing even farther into the world of mystery and romance than she did in the critically acclaimed Red Velvet and Absinthe, Szereto creates an atmosphere with a distinct Gothic flavor where we explore our more forbidden desires. In these tales, love and lust (and kink!) know no boundaries, and all nature of beings—vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, ghosts, and succubae—abound. Tread carefully, danger and desire lie ahead! Includes a special foreword from bestselling author Kate Douglas and a special afterward from bestselling author Rachel Caine and my erotic horror story, "Red House", about a mysterious vampire with a bone to pick with an old priest.

Check out excerpts like this one of "Red House", here.

“Red House” by Zander Vyne

His feet made scuffing sounds on the linoleum as he shuffled from the small galley kitchen back into what served as his living room. The church provided meager lodgings, but free was better rent than many paid, and he did not require much room. He had managed to save most of his salary over the years and looked forward to retiring to a warmer clime, perhaps near an ocean where he could afford a large house and a maid to clean it.

The television cast shadows along the walls and ceiling. No other light shined, not even a candle. John liked it dark at night, after being under the bright fluorescents of the church office all day. Even the stained-glass windows tourists gasped over grew tiresome after long enough, the sun making the red glass stab his eyes like knives, causing terrible headaches.

At first, he thought the dark shape in his reclining chair was a shadow. It had to be a shadow. Then, it spoke.

“Thank you for inviting me into your home.”

“Who are you? How dare you? What do you want? Get out!” John shouted, blurting every thought in his head in his panic.

The man did not move. “Please, sit,” he said, pointing toward the small chintz-covered chair John reserved for his rare guests.

It was the Englishman, the one who had disappeared from the confessional. The one John had thought of several times since the incident. The one he’d dreamed of, much to his dismay.

“You must leave at once or I shall call the police,” John said. It never served to let anyone see your fears, or know your weaknesses. But, he had grown old, and it was harder than it once was to hide behind the mask of priesthood, especially here in his ratty old robe and dirty slippers. He shifted from one foot to the other, alarmed to find his hand shaking as he tried to point commandingly to the door.

“You will do no such thing,” the man told him in a voice so deep, and so genuinely commanding, it caused John to stand up straighter, a frisson of energy crackling down his spine. “Sit. We have much to discuss, you and I.”

John did as asked, his voice fainter as he offered one last protest. “You’ve no right to be in my private chambers.” Clamping his mouth closed, he swallowed thoughts about making an appointment, about the lateness of the hour, about custom and ritual, about the church. The strange man’s posture, tone, and very presence told him he’d have none of it.

Wearing a dark suit, white collar and black tie, his shoes shined so that John saw reflections from the television, the man looked like an attorney, or an undertaker. His features, even masked in half shadow, were arresting. Strong, angular jawbones met to form a firm, wide chin; long blade-like nose and lips managed to be sensual though they were thin.

“You’ve dreamed of me,” the man said. His expression held no animosity, yet his brown eyes glittered with fierce intensity.

A ripple of fear coursed through John’s middle. It would do no good to lie.

Cover Reveal - Darker Edge of Desire: Gothic Tales of Romance

I'm loving the classy looking art the publisher picked for Darker Edge of Desire, the Mitzi Szereto anthology that will include my story, Red House, an edgy tale involving a vampire and a priest.

I'll post a sneak peak soon. In the meantime, check out the pre-order page on Amazon for more details or to reserve your copy now.

Love, Lust and Zombies...oh my!

Zander Vyne Fiction - Under a Perfect Sun - Love, Lust and Zombies
People ask me all the time how I get story ideas, and I say, "From everywhere." Case in point - I visited the BioDome in Arizona last year. While everyone else enjoyed the tour, I was thinking, "Man this would be the place to be if zombies attack." So I wrote a story about it, which I am happy to announce will be in the upcoming Mitzi Szereto anthology, Love, Lust and Zombies.

Red House to Appear in Darker Edge of Desire

Zander Vyne Fiction - Red House - Darker Edge of DesireSometimes, inspiration comes from something as simple as a picture. But, then again, inspiration is rarely ever a simple thing, is it?

In this case, my brain had been picking away at a story idea for years. I only had a nugget in mind (which I can't tell you without spoiling the story), and I couldn't quite sort out how to turn the nugget into something more. When I saw Mitzi Szereto's Call for Submissions for her upcoming Darker Edge of Desire anthology I knew my nugget had a chance of becoming a story, and that she was one of the few editors who'd welcome my twisted, dark story where nothing is quite as it seems. But, it wasn't until I saw this picture of Christian Bale that everything started to fall into place. I could finally see the character that had haunted my brain, demanding me to tell his story. The only problem was that his story and the one in my head were connected by only tenuous threads of an idea. So, I started writing. I listened to the man in this picture and, when a flashback scene demanded an accurate setting, I researched. My research led me to articles and pictures about a "love in" at a park in Los Angeles on Easter Sunday back in the '60's and that's when all the pieces came together and my story (his story) became clear.

The resulting story, Red House, was accepted for publication. Validation is always a lovely thing, but even better is when the character who's been whispering in your ear for years finally says, "Thank you," and sinks back into the darkness, content.

Thrones of Desire: The Last Sacrifice

Isn't this the most awesome cover for a fantasy, erotica anthology you've ever seen? I had to share it with you right away, I love it so much!

Thrones of Desire, edited by Mitzi Szereto, is out from Cleis Press in September. It includes my story, The Last Sacrifice, the romantic tale of a girl in love with an otherworldly creature, facing death as sacrifice to a dragon.

The title/author lineup for the collection is terrific:

Hot as a Dragon’s Blood – Eric Del Carlo
Of High Renown – Janine Ashbless
At the Sorcerer’s Command – Kim Knox
Silver – Anna Meadows
In the Kingdom of Roz – Madeline Moore
Key to the Queen’s Elixir – Jo Wu
Here There Be Dragons – Ashley Lister
Flesh and Stone – Sacchi Green
Saints and Heroes – M. H. Crane
Escape – Mitzi Szereto
Eyekeeper – Aurelia T. Evans
The Widow’s Man – Nyla Nox
Jericho – Megan Arkenberg
The Last Sacrifice – Zander Vyne

Mitzi Szereto is the editor of Red Velvet and Absinthe. She's not afraid to push the boundaries of erotica so I know this collection will be literary, sometimes dark, but above all, sexy.

PRE-ORDER from Amazon

Thrones of Desire: The Last Sacrifice

Coming this Fall - The Last Sacrifice, in Mitzi Szereto's Thrones of Desire: Erotic Tales of Swords, Mist and Fire.

Read stories where lust and legend abound, and adventure, passion and danger entwine. Think mystical lands and creatures, kings and queens, knights and renegades, heroes and villains, warlords, maidens and princesses. Think battles and danger, honor and dishonor, good and evil. Most of all, think hearts filled with passion and secret desire. This is a place where romantic chivalry is alive and well, but so too is romantic wickedness. This is a place where the good do not always win, and the bad are often more captivating and desirable than their altruistic counterparts. In these lush and timeless landscapes, the battle for flesh can be as important as the battle for power. Intrigue, sorcery, revenge, lawlessness, dark secrets and mysterious elixirs; entanglements with supernatural beings – everything is possible in these magical mythical landscapes. Inspired by Game of Thrones, these imaginative steamy tales will transport you to fantastical realms.  PREORDER

Even Someone who Doesn't Like Anthologies Loves Red Velvet and Absinthe

"A few of my favorite stories were "Snowlight, Moonlight" by Rose De Fer, "The Blood Moon Kiss" by Mitzi Szereto, "La Belle Mort" by Zander Vyne and "Tea for Two" by Claire Buckingham."  Read Cherise Everhard's full review here.

Romancing the Book Red Velvet Review

Here's yet another great review for Red Velvet and Absinthe from Romancing the Book, highlighting my story, La Belle Mort -

"The two stories that just completely rocked my world were: The Blood Moon Kiss and La Belle Mort. The Blood Moon Kiss finds us on the set of a popular “Vampire” show. The amount of heat that oozed off the pages of this story should have melted my Nook, I’m so glad it didn’t. However, La Belle Mort, a story that finds us in a cell with a young lady awaiting punishment (hanging) for something she didn’t do . . well, this story was one that I had to set my Nook down after reading. I needed a moment to just let the story sink in.

Favorite Quote: “In fear can be found pleasure, just as in darkness can be found light.” from La Belle Mort

Jane Austen Prequels and Sequels also wrote a lovely review.

Reading these reviews was a lovely way to start my week!

Haven't bought the book yet? You can enter to win a free copy At the Book Rat (they love it too!) or you can just BUY IT NOW.

More Love for Red Velvet and Absinthe

I still feel giddy reading reviews like this - "Several of the stories are wonderful because of the language. They are beautifully written, poignant and touching. I particularly liked La Belle Mort (my story!), The Persistence of Memory and The Blood Moon Kiss. There are others that are good, but these three stand out, and almost make the entire book worthwhile."

What Book is That?

Reading the great reviews for La Belle Mort has been such a pleasure (I'll tell you more about that in a minute). Here's another one posted today -

From the wonderful blog, What Book is That...Probably the biggest standout for me was "La Belle Mort" by Zander Vyne, where a noblewoman sentenced to hang for theft meets a mysterious stranger who teaches her to have faith in the most unorthodox of ways and then ends on the biggest cliffhanger.  It's like Choose Your Own Adventure taken to the extreme.

For a long time, I belonged to a writer's group. Every now and then, I'd post a story only to have someone rip it to shreds - telling me all the reasons it would never sell, was offensive, or just plain wrong. Today, as I sip a glass of wine (red, of course!), and read more reviews by readers who really love what I created, I'm glad I persisted. I'm proud I stuck to my convictions and didn't give up on stories like this one. I can also share with you that I've sold every story someone in that writer's group ever told me wasn't good enough. I guess I really should say thank you to them too! Maybe having something to fight for gave my words more bite.

I am grateful for readers who like it dark, just the way I do, and for editors like Mitzi Szereto who had the vision to give a home to the wonderful, eclectic and literary stories in Red Velvet And Absinthe. Thank you.

More Great Reviews for La Belle Mort

Vampirique Dezire of Blood, Lust and Erotica gives Red Velvet and Absinthe 4 stars!

Here's what she had to say about my story, La Belle Mort What an outstanding story. Was not prepared for the twist at the end and I found I could not take my eyes off the page. The pace of the story was well set. It was as if the author was purposely writing the words in the same vein as one would make love, slowly at first then with increasing passion until the final destination is reached and released. Well worth the read!
